Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment do I need to start racing?

If you have a bike you want to ride, you must remove the kickstand, chain guard and any pegs.  This is for your safety.  You must also wear a helmet, long sleeved shirt, long pants and closed toed shoes.  If you don't have a bike or helmet, you can use some of our loaner equipment.

I heard BMX is only for boys. Is that true?

Absolutely not!  Some of the fastest people on two wheels are GIRLS!  Just Google some of the sports most gifted athletes:  Alise (Post) Willoughby, Caroline Buchanan, Felicia Stancil and  Mariana Pajón.  Not only are they four of the fastest female riders on earth, they have also been Olympic and World Champions in BMX during their careers.

BMX Racing sounds fun. Is it dangerous?

BMX racing isn’t any more dangerous than other youth sports.  Statistics have shown that kids in less extreme contact sports such as basketball, football, baseball and soccer suffer more injuries than in BMX racing. All sports require protective gear to be worn while participating.  You can’t go on any track without it even if you only want to practice.

My friend races and told me his bike cost $1,500. That's a lot of money!

Your friend has probably been racing for a while (or his parents can afford that).  You can start out racing on a bike from a big box store or even buy a brand new complete race bike for around $250-300 from places online.  There are also several Buy/Sell/Trade BMX bike groups on Facebook where you can find some sweet deals.  Links to local bike shops and nationwide vendors can be found on the "Link" button at the top of this page.  Again, we always have a loaner until you can find something you want.  Don't let that price scare you!

OK I'm sold! How much is it going to cost to sign up?

Anyone who wants to try out BMX receives a FREE One-Day Membership!  If you find that BMX is right for you, you can purchase an individual annual membership for $80 a year and it begins the day you sign up.  This membership is with USABMX and allows you to race at any track in the country and receive a PULL magazine.  A second  family member signing up is only $75 and a third family member (or more) is just $70.  Balance bike memberships are also available for the little tykes at a reduced rate.  You will still need to pay a race fee when you go to any track for that day's events.  These prices can vary between $8-15 for a single point event.  But remember, your first race will always be our gift to you!

I'm sure I'll have more questions later. How can I contact someone?
